What is Princess?
Princess seams are long rounded seams sewn into the front, or the back of the bodice, or dress; traditionally fitted, cut in single pieces, hanging in an unbroken line, from shoulder to hem.
Carefully tailored to add shaping as this cut closely follows a woman’s bust line from the shoulder, or under the arm, and down to the lower hem, or bodice.
This style can go free of a waistline as shaping is created without darts, instead by joining edges of different curvature, creating a long, slimming look; the linear panels draw the eyes lengthwise down.
Most often seen in dresses with an “A-line” silhouette, but again, there are many, many variations to any and all cuts, and you will see Princess seams on Sheath dresses, and Shift dress, long and short, etc.
